Held this year on August 5 to 9, 2009, Digby Scallop Days, is the community’s annual event to pay homage to the revered scallop. This year’s focus was on family. Activities included everything from crowning the Scallop Queen, parades, buskers, bands, an antique auto show, contests like scallop shucking, net knitting and scallop shell skipping.

SkyPower was a diamond sponsor of the event. We also had an information booth available to provide attendees with information about our Digby Wind Power Project, wind power, solar power and our projects throughout North America.

Let Them Be Kids

Vaughn Vantassell Memorial Park

On September 26, 2009, over 100 volunteers came together to build a playground in the community of Digby, the only public playground of its kind in the area.

MOPS, Moms on the Playground Society of Digby teamed up with Let Them Be Kids, a national non-profit organization that identifies groups across Canada that need assistance in securing funds and the building of play structures for children who may not access to safe, and secure places to play.

SkyPower was one of the major sponsors of the event alongside the local Canadian Tire, Scotiabank and Sobeys.

SAILabration

On the weekend of July 24th, 2009, Admiral Digby and Smiths Cove Museums held their 14th annual SAILabration event in support of the operation and maintenance of these two local Digby museums. Community activities included sailboat races, a reception at the Yacht Club, a reception at the Digby Museum, special exhibits at both museums and a dinner and auction.

The Admiral Digby Museum was established in 1972 and takes its name from Admiral Robert Digby who led a flotilla of Loyalists who arrived in Digby in 1782. It’s structure is a Georgian or Loyalist home dating to the mid-1800’s. Smiths Cove Historical Society has been responsible for preserving the architecture and heritage of both the old Temperance Hall Meeting House, circa 1835, which now houses the museum and the old Methodist Meeting House, circa 1885.

As a gold sponsor, SkyPower assisted monetarily to the ongoing work of the historical societies.
