This is our way of giving back to local communities.
It's our way of showing we care.
At SkyPower, we believe deeply that as a profitable business, we have an obligation to give back to the communities in which we work. SkyPower Cares is our way of doing this.
Did you know that 1.2 billion people around the world currently live with little or no access to electricity? For these families, this often means relying on dangerous, polluting and expensive kerosene lanterns and candles as a source of light. It means increased health risks and more air pollution. It means charging a cell phone and staying connected to the global economy is challenging.
Through SkyPower Cares, we gift portable home solar systems and lights to families around the world without sufficient access to electricity. Why? Because we think no one should have to live with energy poverty.
Since the announcement of SkyPower Cares in 2013, SkyPower has gifted over 5,000 solar lamps in South Africa and Tanzania. We have also distributed home solar systems in Kenya, with many more on their way.
Basic power is critical for empowering youth to become the leaders of tomorrow. That’s why we chose to gift over 5,000 solar desk lamps in South Africa and Tanzania to schoolchildren without sufficient access to electricity. In total, these solar lamps bring more than 7.3 million hours of light each year.
This initiative invests in students so they can further their education, helping them develop skills that contribute to continued economic growth in their communities and the rest of the world.
In August 2016, we gifted the first SkyPower Home solar systems to families in Kenya who currently lack access to electricity.
These portable solar systems provide reliable, safe, clean energy to families so that their children can study in the evening, their cell phones stay charged, and they have light after the sun goes down. The systems also offer a safe alternative to kerosene lanterns and candles, helping families save money on energy-related expenses.
We provide more than renewable energy; we create opportunities for improved socio-economic wellbeing.
SkyPower is proud to support the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Between our work to develop utility-scale solar power and our initiatives through SkyPower Cares, we enable progress to be made directly and indirectly against 13 of the 17 SDGs.
"I am very happy with the system, and especially glad that now my phone is constantly on, because I now have electricity. My children are also very glad as they can easily do their homework when school is in session.”
