First Light 1 - 9.1MW Solar Project, Stone Mills, Ontario
Activated on September 28, 2009 – First Light was developed by SkyPower and its joint-venture partner SunEdison.
First Light was also awarded the “Best PV Project of the Year” in December 2009 by the Canadian Solar Industries Association.
 |
About the Project:
- First solar project to reach commercial operation
in Canada - Fall 2009.
- First Light
is one of the largest solar energy projects in Canada (9.1MW covering 90 acres).
- Construction was completed by a significant workforce.
- Owned by SkyPower & SunEdison partnership.
Quick Facts - First Light 1 will:
- Power up to 1000 typical Ontario
homes annually.
- Displace approximately 8000 metric tonnes of carbon emissions annually.
- Offset carbon emissions equivalent to removing over 1700 cars from the road each year.

System Description
First Light is approximately a 9.1 megawatt ground-mounted solar PV system. The system covers almost 90 acres of industrial land with approximately 126,000 thin film PV solar panels.
Total Estimated Output
During the first complete year of operation, the PV system is projected to produce more than 11.5 million kilowatt hours (kWh) of clean, solar energy. That is enough energy to power almost 1,000 average Canadian homes. Over 20 years, the system is estimated to produce more than 210 million kWh, enough energy to power more than 42,000 average Canadian homes for a year.
Environmental Impacts
Over 20 years, the zero-emission system is estimated to prevent more than 152,000 metric tons of CO2 that would be emitted during the production of electricity from fossil fuels. This is equivalent of taking more than 35,000 cars off the road for one year. |
